Sit and knit a bit International Women's Day

  • Sitandknitabi
100 million stitches to represent 100 million women

    What do we want? Knitting!

Make as many squares as you can to join our massive blanket.

What size: 6 inch by 6 inch | 15 cm by 15 cm

When do we want it? Now!

Where to: Jetson & Janssen, c/o Tramway, 25 Albert Drive, Glasgow G41 2PE.

All knitting must be with us by Tuesday 1st March.

Why the big blanket? 100 million missing women.

It is estimated that 100 million women are missing from the world today for reasons of gender discrimination. These reasons include: gender provoked infanticide and abortion, the sex slave industry, and the channelling of reasources and medical care to the men in communities first (eg vaccinations). They include the consequences of poor education, and preventable complications in child birth, and conditions like fistula.

‘I wanted to be part of something that unites women around the world’
quote from one of the many letters we have received from women and men across the globe

    PLEASE NOTE:

    • Your knitting will be well loved and cared for wisely during and after the event.

    • We plan to support 5 charitable organisations on a local, national and international level. Please see charity page for more details: The Women's Support Project, Glasgow Women's Library, The Fawcett Society, Apne Aap, Care

    • Do not worry too much about shape, size or perfection - all stitches welcome.

    •  Please feel free to design it as you wish, with words or with patterns. It can be simple, crochet, shiny, stripy, fair Isle, fancy, with something personal or just plain 'ol garter stitch.

    •  All knitting welcome.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What will we do with the wool?

Make it into art. Raise money.

    Where will the money/blanket go?

    Can I make in beautiful?

Please feel free to design it as you wish, with words or with patterns. It can be simple, shiny, stripy, fair isle, fancy, with something personal or just plain 'ol garter stitch. All knitting welcome. Get clacking!

    I can't knit, what should I do?

If you can't knit, head for someone who can, and if you ask nicely you might get a lesson. For a really special experience I can recommend going to the older generations for a lesson: this is how this ancient craft has been passed down and shared through the ages.
look on the internet for your local group Alternatively there is always 'how to' on 'you tube'!

How to get the perfect 6 inch square, no matter what your yarn / needle size:

    cast on 3

skip 1, k1, make 1, knit to end of row

repeat this until the side of the square is 6 inches (15 cm)

     knit 2 rows straight

skip 1, knit 2 tog, k to end of row

repeat this until 3 stitches remain

     cast off
